Cellular Detoxification: Healthy Habits to Reduce Toxic Load Naturally

Technology has advanced over the last hundred years, which has been totally amazing for many of us. Our lives have been transformed and enriched by this technology. Even though we are blessed with modern-day technology, it has come with a price due to the creation of thousands of chemicals. These chemicals are found in many of the products we use in our homes and on our bodies. Learn how to reduce your exposure and focus on cellular detoxification by supporting wellness and habits.

What Is Toxic Load?

These chemicals have provided us with many conveniences. Lots of useful gadgets, cell phones, computers, and televisions. Chemicals are used in dry cleaning, wrinkle-free clothes, stain-resistant carpeting, and upholstery. There are chemicals that control insects in our homes and in our gardens. Chemicals also preserve our food and keep hospitals and food manufacturing more sterile. There are also chemicals used in our personal care products, such as toothpaste, deodorant, soaps, shampoos, make-up, and cleaning products. There are even chemicals found in the plastics we use.

These chemicals, although they may be somewhat safe individually in low quantities. When these chemicals are combined with other chemicals, their toxic load can become a burden for our bodies. Our bodies are designed to process and eliminate many substances naturally, however, over exposure can lead to the necessity of cellular detoxification to support overall wellness

The Body’s Natural Detoxification Systems

Our bodies detox naturally through BULLS.

  • Bowels through elimination.
  • Urinary System through the kidneys.
  • Lungs through exhalation.
  • Liver through cleansing the blood
  • Skin and Lymphatic vessels remove excess fluid and waste.

Healthy lifestyle habits and gut health support these elimination areas as well as cellular detoxification.

Healthy Habits That Help Reduce Toxic Load Naturally

The habits we create create our health. I believe that. Caring for your body with these habits will help you reduce your need for cellular detoxification and toxic load:

Eat More Whole Foods. Focus on including fiber, nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables that support gut health, and staying hydrated.

Reduce Ultra-Processed Foods: Eliminate processed and ultra-processed foods, and limit those high in sugar from your diet.

Improve Indoor Air Quality with plants, air filters, and letting the sunshine in.

Choose Safer Household Products by creating DIY cleaning recipes with vinegar, castile soap, and essential oils.

Support Healthy Elimination by staying hydrated, taking a walk after your meals, and focusing on chewing to promote digestive health.

Sweat and move through walking, enjoy a far infrared sauna, and do a fun activity.

Environmental Chemicals We Commonly Encounter

The chemicals we are exposed to are found in plastics (BPA), VOCs, heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides, fragrances and cleaning chemicals.

Don’t panic, just focus on reading your labels and swapping them out with healthier versions.

Simple Swaps That Make a Big Difference

The best swaps I have found are as follows:

  • Opt for glass instead of plastic.
  • Consider adding a water filtration unit to your home and shower.
  • Focus on using fragrance-free products for cleaning and personal care.
  • Reduce those plug-in air fresheners and consider diffusing essential oils.

Favorite Cleaning Recipes

  • 16 ounces of Water
  • 16 ounces of Vinegar
  • 2 TBSP Castile Soap
  • 30 Drops of Essential Oils. I like to use the following essential oils or a combination of them: tea tree, lemon, lime, or orange. Nature’s Sunshine makes an essential oil Blend called Purity that has a really clean and refreshing scent.
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Cup Vinegar
  • 3 Drops of Dishwashing Liquid. I use Dawn. This stuff works well and rarely leaves any streaks.
  • 3 oz Distilled Water
  • 1 oz Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 24 Drops of any blend or single essential oil

I use this air freshener all the time in the winter. It seems to help moisturize the dry air and help with static.

  • Create a paste with castile soap and baking soda. I usually use 1 – 3 tablespoons of castile soap with 1/4 to 3/4 cup of baking soda depending on how big of an area I am scrubbing. I also add between 3-10 drops of an essential oil.

Traditional Wellness Approaches to Supporting the Body

Besides focusing on healthier lifestyle habits and swapping out your products, there are herbs that have traditionally been used to support the body’s natural detoxification pathways.

Some of my favorite herbs include:

  • Dandelion helps reduce water retention, support digestion, and stimulate the liver.
  • Burdock supports the liver and kidneys during natural processes.
  • Milk thistle contains antioxidant compounds traditionally used to support liver health.
  • Chlorophyll helps support the body’s natural cleansing process, neutralizes free radicals, reduces body odor, and promotes skin health.
  • Stinging Nettle supports the natural processes of the body helping to flush the kidneys, stimulate lymph flow, and contains antioxidants that support the liver.

You can view my favorite Nature’s Sunshine Products that support the natural detoxification pathways of the body and contain many of the above herbs. Detox Basics, Cellular Detox, and Enviro Detox are a couple of my favorites.

The Role of Gut Health in Detoxification

Since our bodies are equipped to detoxify itself, supporting gut health by maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is essential for proper detoxification. Your liver is one of the digestive system’s biggest detoxifiers, and there is a two-way communication between the gut and the liver known as the gut-liver axis. When your gut is feeling stressed or out of balance, it affects the liver’s ability to do its job and filter out these toxins. So focus on keeping your microbiome balanced by eating fiber and whole foods, staying hydrated, and managing your stress.

Always Strive For Progress Over Perfection

We can’t live in a bubble and avoid exposure to all toxins. Focusing on small and realistic changes to your daily routine and building healthier habits over time will help you and your body manage them.

Small daily choices can support your body, digestion, energy, and overall wellness over time. Focusing on hydration, whole foods, movement, gut health, and reducing unnecessary chemical exposure can help you feel your best naturally.
