Your metabolic health is also closely connected to your gut health. When your gut is out of balance, it can affect how your body processes energy, manages inflammation, and regulates blood sugar.

You may have noticed that once we reach our forties, many studies show that our bodies undergo a shift that affects our metabolism and cardiovascular health. After 40, our metabolism slows, and we begin to lose muscle mass, usually become less active, and notice a hormonal imbalance. Women tend to have a decrease in estrogen, and men have a decrease in testosterone.
As our metabolism slows, we also begin to store more fat in our midsection, reducing insulin sensitivity, which can lead to higher blood sugar levels. We also seem to be dealing with more stress, which can lead to higher cortisol levels.

- Clean Eating is great for your metabolism and gut health. Focus on eating more protein, especially at breakfast. Protein helps you feel fuller longer, helps balance blood sugar, and helps you maintain muscle mass. Eat a gut-healthy diet rich in fiber and whole foods. Also, stay hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses of water each day.
- Get Moving – Strength Training is important for maintaining muscle mass. You can lift weights or do resistance exercises (such as Pilates or bands) at least twice per week. Muscle tissue helps your body burn more calories at rest than fat. You can also add movement to your day. Move frequently throughout the day to avoid the downside of excessive sitting. Examples include taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking farther from the entrance so you have to walk more steps.
- Quality Sleep – Make sure you get enough sleep and that it’s high-quality. Those of us who sleep 7-9 hours help our bodies maintain hormonal balance and help us to avoid feeling hungry, insulin resistance, and weight gain.
- Manage your Stress with deep breathing or vagus nerve exercises.
