Earthing and Grounding

Earthing Basics

Earthing and grounding are two terms that refer to the same thing: physical grounding. Physical grounding or earthing is when you walk or stand barefoot on the grass, dirt, or sand (the earth). Many people beleive that touching the earth helps you absorb free electrons, which can help lower pain and inflammation and help you sleep better. We once thought the Earth had a neutral charge, but it was discovered that the Earth has an abundance of negative charges or electrons, making it the perfect ground for all things that come in contact with it. You can also purchase grounding or earthing sheets or mats that you plug into an electrical outlet.

Scientific evidence supporting these health benefits is still limited. However, spending time in nature can be beneficial for overall well-being and mood.

Psychological Grounding

There is also psychological grounding, which helps you cope with anxiety, stress, or traumatic memories. Many of you may have heard of the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, which asks you to focus on 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. Doing this helps distract your thoughts from what feels overwhelming and brings you back to reality.

Electrical Grounding

Electrical grounding is a safety feature used in homes and electrical systems. Those three-prong outlets in your house include a grounding prong that connects to the home’s grounding system. This provides a path for excess electrical current to travel safely into the earth, helping reduce the risk of electrical shock and damage to electrical equipment.

Earthing and Grounding Products

If walking barefoot outside isn’t practical, there are also products designed to help you practice earthing indoors. These products include grounding mats, sheets, mattress covers, and grounding socks.

The products are designed to connect you to a grounding outlet, which connects you to the earth. It is intended to mimic the connection of standing barefoot outdoors. If you decide to use an earthing product, follow the manufacturer’s directions and make sure the outlet is properly grounded.

I personally prefer the simplest form of grounding: spending time outdoors with my shoes off and feet in the sand.

Does Earthing and Grounding Work

There is limited research on whether earthing and grounding provide physical health benefits. Some small studies have explored possible effects on sleep, stress, pain, inflammation, and other areas of health, but larger and higher-quality studies are still needed.

For me, earthing can be as simple as going outside barefoot, walking in the grass, spending time at the beach, or sitting near the water. Whether the benefits come specifically from grounding or simply from slowing down and spending time in nature, I know I enjoy it and feel better afterward.
