Why I Use Water Filtration Products in My Home

Good Health Begins with Good Water – Aquasana

Drinking healthy water is good for our health. Many of us aren’t even familiar with the benefits of water. Water helps your body maintain a normal body temperature, lubricates and cushions your joints, and protects your tissues and spinal cord. It also aids the body in detoxification through urine, bowel movements, and sweating. Therefore, determining the best type of water for us can be challenging.

Clean water is foundational to everything I teach, gut health, inflammation reduction, a healthy metabolism, and pain management all depend on proper hydration with quality water. It’s one of the first things I address with every client.

Why Water Filtration Became Important to Me

My husband and I first became interested in water filtration over 20 years ago when we came home from work late one night (after the news), there had been a boil alert out on the water, and we didn’t hear about it. Needless to say, we both drank the water and got sick.

My husband did a lot of research before deciding to purchase the Aquasana drinking water filter and their shower water filtration products.  We currently use their under-sink countertop unit and their shower water filter. My husband had spoken with several companies and was impressed with the knowledge Aquasana possessed and the education the company provided about the numerous health risks associated with unsafe drinking water. Did you know that drinking water can have chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, cysts, or parasites in it?  If you want to know more about what’s in your water, read the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations. That experience changed how we think about water and led us to Aquasana, which we have trusted ever since.

Below is information about the overall condition of our water and why you should consider water filtration products for your home, whether it’s a Countertop Unit, Drinking Water Filters, a Shower Filter, or a Whole-House Unit. Quality water filtration products are available for purchase through Aquasana, and I have conveniently linked with them so you can receive a 20% to 50% discount.

The Case for Healthy Water

Charles Strand, author of All About Water and holder of 17 U.S. patents for water purification technologies, makes a compelling argument that water quality may be one of the most important and most overlooked factors in our overall health. Here are the key points from his research that I find most valuable.

Our bodies are over 70% water. That single fact tells us everything we need to know about the critical importance of water quality. According to Strand, without an abundant intake of clean, chemical-free water, every other wellness effort is largely compromised.

The Problem with Tap Water

Tap water in the U.S. commonly contains trace levels of synthetic chemicals, PFAS, heavy metals, parasites, and chlorination by-products — all of which can pose real health risks over time. As Strand puts it, we can either filter these contaminants before we drink or force our bodies to act as the filter.

The Truth About Bottled Water

Many people switch to bottled water, assuming it’s safer. It isn’t necessarily. Federal guidelines require bottled water to be no worse than tap water — not better. And those guidelines only apply when water crosses state lines, which most bottled water is specifically packaged to avoid. According to Strand, it’s an industry built more on perception than purity.

Why Distilled and Reverse Osmosis Fall Short

Distillation and reverse osmosis systems were originally designed for industrial use, not for human consumption. Both strip water of its natural trace minerals, causing the pH to drop and the water to become acidic. Since water always seeks pH balance, de-mineralized water can pull minerals, primarily calcium, from our bones and teeth to compensate.

Strand and other researchers note that long-term consumption of de-mineralized water has been associated with mineral deficiencies and an increasingly acidic internal environment. An overly acidic body increases free radical production, which research links to elevated disease risk. Interestingly, populations around the world known for longevity tend to live in areas with highly alkaline, mineral-rich water.

The Best Solution — Selective Filtration

The most effective and economical approach, according to Strand, is the use of selective filtration systems that remove harmful contaminants while preserving the beneficial trace minerals your body needs. This produces the healthiest, best-tasting water and is the technology behind the Aquasana systems I’ve used and recommended for over 20 years.

My experience with Alkalized Water

Water filtration products have been around for a long time. Currently, there are ads for water filtration products and pitchers you can use at home to filter out contaminants and create healthy water. There is also a lot of information about alkalized water and the numerous health benefits people have experienced. One of my concerns is that the type of alkalized water system you purchase will depend on the quality of water filtration you receive. So is it healthy?

Curious about alkalized water, some years ago, I attended a local meeting on the topic. The man presenting the alkalized water product demonstrated and tested reverse osmosis water, various bottled waters, various sports drinks, and various sodas. All the products tested within each group were from different companies, and all had an acidic pH (below 7.0)! Soda was the most acidic. I was curious to see if my home water (I use the Aquasana Counter Top Unit) was also acidic, and it wasn’t. My water from the Aquasana Counter Top Unit was the only water to test neutral, with a pH of 7.0!

Putting Alkalized Water to the Test

The man conducting the seminar was very nice and gave everyone a gallon of alkalized water to take home. I was curious to see how long the water would stay that alkalized, so the next morning I tested the alkalized water and its pH had dropped to 7.0. I am not saying that Alkalized water doesn’t have benefits, I am expressing my opinion and feel that the units are extremely expensive. There are also health risks associated with the body being too acidic as well as too alkaline. As for me, to make my water more alkalized, I add either a Lemon wedge or liquid chlorophyll! Below are two articles that might help you understand Acidosis and Alkalosis.

If you currently do not use water filters, the following 3 things alone may change your mind. Now is the time to invest in water filtration products for your home!

What’s in our Water?

The following information is sourced from published research and is shared for educational purposes only.

There are many contaminants in water; however, I found these three to be of particular interest.

Chlorine – A Special Problem for Drinking Water

Aaccording to the President’s Council on Environmental Quality, there is increased evidence for an association between rectal, colon, and bladder cancer and the consumption of chlorinated drinking water.  What concerns health officials are the chlorination by-products, “chlorinated hydrocarbons, “known as trihalomethanes (THMs). Most THMs form in drinking water when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring substances, such as decomposing plant and animal materials. Certain types of cancer are now associated with the use of chlorinated drinking water. Suspected carcinogens make the human body more vulnerable through repeated ingestion, and research indicates the incidence of cancer is 44% higher among those using chlorinated water.

Aluminum – Why a Concern in Drinking Water?

For years, researchers have puzzled over the surprisingly high levels of aluminum that turn up in the shriveled brains of Alzheimer’s disease victims. While some scientists believe that the aluminum deposits are only a side effect of Alzheimer’s, a growing number of investigators say that aluminum may play a central role in causing the disease that afflicts mostly older people. Aluminum occurs naturally in some waters but is also introduced into municipal water supplies as aluminum sulfate. Here is an interesting study on the relationship between aluminum concentrations and heavy metals in drinking water and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cysts -Real Pests in our Drinking Water

Cryptosporidium, “Beaver Fever”, Giardia Lamblia

This organic sporozoan, first described in 1907, wasn’t recognized as a cause of human illness until 1976. It is a protozoan parasite that can infect a variety of animals. In the environment, Cryptosporidium is a resilient, infectious, round oocyst about four to six microns in diameter. The cyst is a “suitcase” for the infectious material inside.

Cryptosporidium is widespread in the environment. Oocysts (cysts) have been found in rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, sewage, and treated surface water. Once introduced to water, the oocyst can survive for weeks, even at low temperatures. When ingested, the Oocysts pass through the stomach into the small intestine. There, the Oocysts split open, releasing sporozoites, which invade the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract. Infected cells lining the intestine appear normal, but their ability to absorb water and nutrients is severely impaired. The water and food ingested pass through the digestive system. Additional Oocysts are formed in the intestine, and either split open to release additional sporozoites, continuing the infection, or are excreted in the feces.

Cryptosporidium infection causes the illness cryptosporidiosis. After the Oocysts are ingested, the incubation period typically varies from two to 12 days. With an average of seven days. Disease symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, occasional vomiting, and low-grade fever.

At home, I have been using these products for over twenty years. We use the Aquasana Under-Counter 3-Stage Drinking Water Filtration System for our daily drinking water, and their Shower Filter for the bath. The shower filter is often overlooked, but chlorine can be absorbed through the skin and lungs during a hot shower; filtering it out matters just as much as filtering your drinking water. Aquasana also offers whole-house filtration systems for comprehensive coverage throughout your home.
